I built stuff out of energy, fully knowing that everything I built would (because of the nature of energy) eventually disorganize and return to energy unorganized. I built beautiful stuff, worlds and creatures. One of the species of creatures I built had the ability to learn from its experiences, to remember information and make decisions based on the information they learned. After a long time, having watched those creatures, I went to one of their worlds and talked with one of them named Joe.
“Joe,” I said, “you guys are weird. I didn’t know you would turn out the way you did, with all your arguing, fighting, killing, all your needs, wants, desires, all your physical, mental, and emotional attachments, entanglements, identities, and all the bullshit you teach to each other, all the generation after generation programming and indoctrination–all the bullshit you tell each other–and all your religions, opinions, biases, prejudices and absurd and nonsensical conclusions you draw, and all your selfishness, egotistical behavior, and your greed, vanity and pride. And in those things, plus your willingness to destroy the very world I built for you, I am disappointed, totally.
Joe said, “Well, that makes me feel worthless. Thanks for the compliments. So let me get this straight. You built everything, knowing they wouldn’t last, knowing that to continue to stay an organized energy form we have to kill to re-energize, meaning we have to kill and eating other energy forms, which are scarce, and you made weather and seasons where we could hardly survive, and you blame us, and blame it on vanity and pride, greed and selfishness. Is that abought right?”
“Yes, that’s about right,” I said. “I built you with the capacity to choose, to make decisions based on the information you gathered. You think, contrast and compare, evaluate, and you speak and do things, and you learn, either by good counsel or by the things you suffer. You have free will and free agency. You can do anything you can think of, and look what your world is like, a complete mess. Most of what I see is violence, which is the very reason that I killed most you once already, and now I’m thinking I’ll just let you finish the job killing each other. But I’m not going to let you destroy this world.”
Joe said, “If we disgusting beings that you created are not on this world, what are you going to do with it? And just so you know, not all of us are garbage. Some of us are very loving and kind, plus we invented gangster rap, hip hop and the hoola hoop. Come on man, at the least we’re hilarious entertainment, after all, isn’t that what you were doing when you started creating–just enjoying yourself?”
“Good point,” I said. “Which is why I didn’t kill all of you last time. I had high hopes the newer generations would use their free will and agency to do better, but it’s gotten now to the point where you can not only continue to murder each other, and even kill of your species, but you can destroy worlds, or worse, go populate them and make an entire solar system or galaxy a disaster. I’m not sure what to do. If you had built all this, what would you do?”
Joe asked, “What about the humans who see the magnificence and beauty of creation and are awed by its majesty and its wonders and are filled with love and appreciation and walk among their fellow man with gentleness and kindness? What of the humans that cause the very rocks, plants, and animals to be overjoyed by their mere presence–the humans who are one with nature, with life itself, all that is life, and who have experienced that they are temporary energy forms, pieces of life that have evolved to be one with the very source of life? What about them?”
“Yes, humans evolve, can devolve too,” I said. “It’s the nature of creation itself, constant change.” Here’s another question for you Joe, ‘If life has a point, a purpose, an intent, what do you think it might be besides its own joy, its own entertainment, its own pleasure (which includes you and your pleasure as a piece of life that is self-aware, has free-will, agency, can make choices just like all the pieces of life who are just like you?)”
Joe said, “I have an answer, but first a question. Why do you care so much about the violence that is life itself, that is the very nature of creation, or life? So what that there is evolution to love and devolution to control, to vanity and pride, and all the high entropy and disorder that destroys what has been built?”
I said, “I’ll tell you, right after you tell me your answer about the point, purpose and intent of life.”
Joe said, “My answer about the point, purpose, and intent of life is: There is none-other-than life does what it does for its pleasure, just like humans do their lives for their pleasure.”
I said, “Only self-aware, conscious and intelligent energy-forms care, and if they didn’t care, the game of life wouldn’t be worth playing. Games have rules. No ruled, not a game. No goal, no game. Life is a game life plays with itself, and you, Joe, and me, and all the other self-aware individual units of conscious-life, are players. If a free-will individual unit of consciousness doesn’t care about anything, it would have no purpose, no point, and no reasons to play. There very essence of game play, is to care. No care, no game, no players.”
